Religious Education
Weekly Program
St. Peter Claver offers a weekly religious education program for all parish children who are not enrolled in the parish's day school. Faith Formation and catechesis are offered for grades 1-8 on Wednesday afternoons from September through April. Children also have the opportunity to worship and celebrate the sacraments together.
Child Ministry Curriculum
Grades 1 through 8: The "Faith First" scope and sequence is divided into three parts: Doctrine, Scripture and Liturgical Seasons. These three important elements of Catholic belief, God’s Word and Liturgical celebration are interwoven throughout all the grades. This content is also covered separately in each grade. This balanced approach ensures that our children will come to know, love and live the Catholic faith.
This ministry also oversees the preparation process for First Communion and First Reconciliation. Both of these sacraments are celebrated in second grade.
St. Peter Claver child ministry passes on context of our faith in ways that connect children with worship, prayer, service, and community building. This ministry provides the experiences needed for faith development, living a Christian life and developing a sense of belonging to the Catholic Church.
Children meet on Wednesday afternoons, 4:00 – 5:15 pm. Classes run from the end of September through the month of April. Though St. Pete’s has its own program, classes for grades 1-8 are held in the Ss. Cyril and Methodius school building, 822 New Jersey Ave.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word
Parish children, ages four and older, are called forward to hear the readings of the day. The children leave the general assembly for a separate celebration of the Word and return after the homily.
These celebrations of the liturgy are intended to form children in the liturgical language of the Church, to nourish and guide their spiritual growth, and to immerse them in the Word in ways that are understandable to them.
Word services are generally the first and third Sunday of the month during the 10 am Mass.
Youth Ministry
Youth Ministry is the response of the Christian community to the needs of young people, in our case high school age, and the sharing of the unique gifts of those teens with the larger community. We challenge young people to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in the world today; asking them to participate in the life, mission and work of our faith community and foster their total spiritual growth.
We teach our youth the connection between the Bible and their real life experiences. We provide an environment of love, support and encouragement in making their connection with the adults in the parish. We encourage our youth to experience the love of God through prayer and worship. Confirmation Program
Part of the complete Faith Formation Program (High School Religious Education Session) here at St. Peter Claver is the Confirmation preparation program. Although the formation of our teens is an ongoing endeavor, starting in the home and enhanced during their grade school years in either Christ Child Academy or the Religious Education weekly program, a more intense preparation is done in the Junior year, with the reception of the Sacrament the spring of their junior year or at the beginning of their senior year. Candidates meet with small group facilitators for catechesis, attend a one-day retreat, involve themselves in service projects, and learn more about what it means to be a contributing member of the larger church. The actual confirmation ceremony is celebrated with the southside tri-parishes.
